Heres what I did. I love the birds. But just as soon as my tomatoes were ripe and perfect, they would peck them. Dammit! So I planted a bird garden away from the vegetable garden. I have trumpet vines, berries and hyacinth beans there. I put a big dead branch in then planted the vines to grow up it. I put a birdbath by the vines. Lower in the garden is lantana and sunflowers. I have six birdfeeders with different seeds hanging from the vine. The birds dont need to go to my vegetable garden, they have everything they need in their own garden. If they persist, though, you can hang pie tins here and there. They dont like the shiny for some reason. A farmers market here in town uses a recording of bird calls of birds in distress to keep them away. Good Luck.

Why would you want to get rid of the birds? They helpful for your garden for the most part. Remember if you work to keep your yard a natural environment you will be able to maintain it easier. Trying to keep one thing out, ie birds, may upset that balance. The insects may take over your yard because their aren't any natural predators such as the birds. One thing you might try is a bat house. If you are lucky enough to attract bats they will eat most of the food supply that the birds are looking for in your yard.
Good luck

Birds are a GOOD thing to have in your garden. They'll eat the bad bugs. They shouldn't be a problem with seeds as long as your seeds are covered by soil(as they should be, right?). I never see birds eating sprouts.
Good luck and enjoy the brids. It is wonderful to watch them in a birdbath. Try one!

I noticed a lot of used car lots have those plastic owls, they look pretty real. It seems to work too, I never see birds around the cars. I guess it's called a Plastic Owl Decoy or something like that. Here's an example of one:

You'll probably have to cover it with some kind of netting or maybe chicken wire.
