A long time ago, women used to use a cloth (like a washcloth). They would wash it and use it again. Also, in some other cultures, women are ousted to a certain area in the village (perhaps a hut where only "unclean" women live) for the duration of their period. Once their period is done, they must be cleansed so they can live with the rest of the group again.

lots of natural products were used such as: sea sponge tampons, moss. And some cultures honored the women by giving them a break from regular life; the menstruating women gathered in a tent, sat on mats, and stayed there until the menstruation was over.
