A long time ago, women used to use a cloth (like a washcloth). They would wash it and use it again. Also, in some other cultures, women are ousted to a certain area in the village (perhaps a hut where only "unclean" women live) for the duration of their period. Once their period is done, they must be cleansed so they can live with the rest of the group again.
