My phone recorder requires me to tell people to call me to press *1. I don't know how to verbalize the symbol *.

In some contexts you would call '*' an asterisk, but when instructing phone callers what to press, I'd call it 'star'. So 'star one' in this case.

on a phone it is a star other than that it is an asterik
