It's always a great time. I stay in Santo Domingo and then usually end up on buses into the mountains. The beaches are beautiful but since I have beaches at home I figure it is better to see something new. The capital is wonderful, easy to get around. Cabs are cheap, but they have private cars you can get in that are even cheaper...I am not sure I could handle them by myself though, because my spanish is struggling! I love Friday nights in the historic district - you can bar crawl, stop in the parks and hang out with the emo kids - it's fantastic, I always feel like I am in a movie for some reason. Prices are extremely reasonable, even without bargaining, but maybe not in the tourist areas. Everything that isn't imported is super cheap, buy rum instead of vodka! Last time I was there we stumbled into the most fantastic italian restaurant! I am not sure what it was called but there was smoked pig parts hanging from the ceiling and I had a bowl of the best pumpkin soup EVER! In the tourist areas it seems like there are always little kids hoping to make some money that will show you around. We ended up hunting land crabs on the beach with two kids last time I was there, and we bought them lunch and gave them a little money at the end of the day. It's really a beautiful country, I've never had a bad time!

Dominican Republic is a very beautiful country, people are nice, friendly and humble, I 've never heard of a tourist that have had a bad time in my country. since is hot year round you can have a summer vacation even in winter time, yes you can be at any beach having a blast on Christmas day for example. There are tons of different places that you can go to anywhere from the capital to Puerto Plata, La Romana, Punta Cana, Juan Dolio samana, Higuey, etc, etc. no matter where you chose to go to most likely you will have a vacation of a life time, and the prices are reasonable too.

I had a fantastic time in the DR. I stayed at the Luperon Beach Resort, in Luperon, Puerto Plata. i would definitly reccommend a vacation there. The resort was excellent, good service, the beach is fantastic and they even throw what's known in the Maritimes of Canada, a Maritime Kitchen Party (you can find these at many resorts in DR), they bring a band from the east coast of Canada and they entertain during the days. It was really great and you'd have had to try hard not to have a good time, there was lots of singing, dancing and relaxing! One thing to be aware of in DR, is that you will get haggled by the locals. Your best bet is to stay away if you're not interested in buying as there will be stands set up everywhere along the beach area and if you are interested in buying - bargain, bargain, bargain - they will always start out high but you can get great deals by talking them down in price.
I've not been to other parts of Dominican but I can say that I would love to go back. I've been to other resorts in other countries and so far, this one stays up there on my list!

I was born and raised there. I go every year and we have a great time with my family. Just be safe and don't go out of the tourist areas by yourself because there is a lot of crime in some areas, like anywhere else in Latin America.
