Regardless of what you want to go into, the KEY thing you'll have to do is explain away your 8 year gap in employment. Granted, people take time off for a variety of reasons such as raising children. But 8 years is a long time, so you'll have to explain why and how you're qualified to work now. Things could have changed during that time, so an employer may question whether you're up to date of how things actually work today.

Just think about what an HR department does. They hire, train, and fire people. They decide what benefit packages to offer, write job descriptions, handle conflicts and legal issues, maintain databases, etc.

The best way to get a sense of what it involves is to take a class in HR or pick up a book. FYI, one of the most important thinks to realize is that you'll be dealing with highly confidential info such as pay rates for employees. So you must be able to safeguard this sort of info!
