Yes, and the possibility greatly increased as you are over the critical age of 35. Down Syndrome is related to advanced maternal age... that age is set at 35, and the risk that the baby will have downs at age 35.
You could get amniocentesis to help in diagnosing it before the birth of the baby.

My daughter is pregnant, age 38. She asked me about having amniocentesis. I told her that was not appropriate unless you are willing to abort the baby if it is Downs. She told me, no, she was told there were things they could do other than abortion. (??) She talked to a family member who is a neonatal specialist, and he told her, no, only do it if you will abort if it has Downs.

So, she did not have it done.

Ditto for you -- do not have amniocentesis done unless you already know you will abort if it has Downs. Those tests cost money, and every medical procedure has some risks, so don't bother only out of curiosity.

And, if you plan to abort if it has Downs, please make arrangements NOW to have that abortion ASAP after amniocentesis so it doesn't get any bigger before you put it down. The smaller it is, the less developed it's brain is, the less pain it can feel. Also, the smaller it is, the less pain it can feel, the easier on you later.

That's pretty late in life. You're kids will be born right around the time that they should have been graduating from college (or even post graduate school, med school, etc). I don't know if they'll have Down's or not, but I've heard that having kids earlier in life reduced the chances of birth defects. Then again, modern medicine definitely helps.

Good luck with your baby.

maybe... only God knows that...even if the baby does....dont have an abortion.....God sent that baby especially to you because he knew that if you tried, you can give it the love and attention it needs. You never know, the baby might grow up and become the next president. Always give babies a chance. Dont kill them. they deserve a life....just like you do....If the baby does, all it takes is a little more love, you can give that cant you?

It seems that way. How old you will be when your baby is born depends on when your birthday is. If you can't figure this one out, there's a strong possibility you shouldn't be having children.

The possiblity is always there, even for an 18 year old mother. The risk is higer the older you are.

I am sure your dr. will insist you have an amnio to check the fluid to make sure about the downs.
Please ask him/her & don't put it off.
God Bless you & the little one.
