It appears to be something like a zip file when it is downloaded.

Like everybody else says, it's a form of file compression. And WinRAR will unzip(or rather unpack) it for you.

But I'd like to point out, that WinRAR is shareware. Meaning, that it lets you try it for like 30 days, and then you have to pay for it. WinRAR does a great job, it unzips a whole bunch of different compression formats, and it also lets you zip things in the RAR format. So for $30 it's a very good program.

If on the other hand, you don't plan to make your own RAR files, and you only want to unzip them, there's another great program out there called 7-Zip, which is completely free.

Go to download.com and read the reviews if your curious as to which program is best for you

You can download a free version of winrar here: http://bit.ly/1sMdIqr

Winrar is a very good program to unzip files and to decompress a bunch of other formats. You can use also 7zip or winzip for the same purpose but I believe that winrar is the best option. All these programs are very similar (you can compress/decompress files with a simple right click).

The great things is that winrar is free (you can download the trial version that never expires) and it can open all compressed formats: .zip, .rar, .7z / 7zip, .iso, .tar, .jar etc. (much more than the other programs).

That's why I strongly recommend Winrar

It's like a zip file but if it's .rar, then you need to download a .rar program. You can get free trials on the web AND it will unzip not only .rar files, but zip files as well.

.rar is a compressed file/group of files. It is similar to a .zip file. .rar files are used to make a file/files smaller in size. They are also useful in grouping multiple files together to make them easier to transfer. You can use Winrar to extract these files (or make them).
