The minerials in the near by soil make it this way. "The river gets its yellow color mostly from the fine-grained calcareous silts originated from the Loess Plateau which are carried in the flow."

I've heard it is because of the yellowish silt that comprises the river bottom. I'd research it now but I'm tired and going to bed :)

JustMe posted the correct answer. The river carries lots of yellow-colored sediment, hence the name.

It's is because the yellowish sand at the lake-bed (bottom of the river).
