We could control the plate movement with the same idea that tectonic plates float on top of hot liquid magma.

by the time humans ran out of space to live (there is a whole lot of space on planet earth with NO humans), the technology would have evolved where the lack of space would not be a problem. However, moving a tectonic plate to the middle of the Pacific would not be one of the options.

As the population grew, we would run out of food and water long before we ran out of space.

Assume a hefty 1000 sq ft of space per person, a nice roomy amount. Assume an absurdly large population (clearly beyond the sustainable food/water limit) of 100 billion people. That 100 trillion square feet of space would fill a square 1900 miles on a side. Even taking out Antarctica, you still have only used up about 1/55th of the land surface.

Fact is, you can build up, reduce the amount of space and multiply by several 10s on top of all that and STILL have enough room. You are talking perhaps a hundred trillion ppl, about 160,000 times the current population before you literally run out of living space.

Fresh water and food get scarce long before then.

I suscribe to the 'never say never' addage, but humans moving a tectonic plate several thousands of miles gets into the 'never' realm.

Mr. Quark is right--its not space thats an issue--its more about resources--water, arable land, clean air, etc. Clean (potable) water will be the number one problem in years to come...

This won't happen for hundreds if not thousands of years, humans only occupy a small percentage of the earths surface.

Then Americans will declare war on countries that have land they want and water. Those countries will be declared terrorists even if their only weapon is a small hammer!
