My cd rom suddenly stopped working while burning a disc. Troubleshooting got me no where and I was wondering if there is a way to tell if it is really my cd rom or if it is something with the computer itself. I am running windows xp home ed. on a PC.

rebooting doesn't help, either.

Did you remove the CD that you tried to burn yet?

(Do that).

Then try to reboot.

Insert another blank CD-R and try again.

If you are using the Windows burn program... you might try Nero or Roxio cd burner programs. You might also use Windows Updates to see if there are some Roxio CD burner update included.

Good luck

It suddenly stopped while u were burning a disc? Did you receive any error messages? Sometimes a bad file or a bad disc can cause error. Some CD burners only accept certain brands of discs. You can check to see if there is a updated version for the driver. It may help too. I often don't have any problem with the CD or DVD burners. I need more information in order to diagnose its problem.

Depends on what kind of computer you have really certain computer have hardware diagonsis tool in the start menu. Or you could try running a recovery and wiping all software out to eliminate the possibility of it being software, if after a recovery it still doesn't work its the drive.

youcan see if you can read a disc. if you can then I do not think it is broken, also you can reboot your computer and try burning something else because that thing you were trying to burn might be corupted. and if it still does not work then hook it up to another computer.
