The average life of a ball is six pitches. Since most major league games average between 250 and 300 pitches, that would put the ball count at about 40 or 50 balls used per game.

we have counted at Cardinals games before. We play a game that says you take a drink every time a new ball is used. It is usually between 80 and 100.
Every time the Cardinals caome off the field, they give away a ball. there is 9 right there. Albert Pujols, Scott, Roles, jim Edmonds and company are usually good for a homer or 2 every game, just as the other team is too. Every player hits at least on foul ball a game, some times on per at bat, so that could be as much as 27 per team. The pitcher can request a new ball when ever he wants, and balls get thrown out each time they touch the dirt.

there are 12 dozen prepared to be used for each game, supplied by the home team. now, more or less may wind up being used, but that's how many are set aside, ready to go. some of these answers....20 or 30....c'mon, use your head people. think of all the foul balls, homers, scuffed balls, etc. you see 8 or 9 fouled off in a single at bat on many occasions. not to mention the simple fact that the pitcher can request and receive a brand new ball AT ANY TIME during the game.

I'm not positive, but I think they go through 4 or 5 dozen on average.

depends on how many hit the dirt and how many home runs, foul balls, or ground rule doubles there are. so probably a whole lot.
