Any server is a powerful computer that has a lot of Hard disk and very powerful processor. We have a forest of server installed in a database center. Any time you visit a web page a request is send to server where all the data is residing and it will process the request and send the result back to your browser.

Think about it like in real life. Think of Yahoo as a restaurant, and think of a server in a restaurant that gets your order and deliver you food. Well now mail server basically takes e-mails and deliver them and stores the info about your e-mails and other people's.
