If it is a relationship based on an understanding that it could turn into something more than friendship, and you plan to possibly hook up with the person for an affair, then I would have to say yes it is. If it is a relationship that will never step over the line of friendship, then no, it isn't.
I also think that if it is a relationship in which you feel you have to hide the details from your significant other, then even subconsciously in some way you feel that it might be more, and is cheating.

I do. It's not all about the "physical" aspect, though people get hung up on that part. You are cheating by taking time away from where it should be, which is with your family, investing in it's health & happiness. There are so many challenges in keeping a family together these days. Don't go adding one more to it!

It is cheating. It will be easier to transfer this behavior into a real-life scenario once the thrill of the online relationship dims. You are treading in deep water. If there is a problem in your marriage, an "escape" online relationship is not the solution. Ask yourself why you need this outlet and be honest.

well... there's nothing wrong with talking to people... the question is though, would you rather be with your spouse, or be online chatting with someone you dont know?
if you'd rather be online, then yes... you are cheating... you are cheating your other half out of the possibility of working things out because you are putting all your efforts into a stranger instead of into your relationship. if you dont put any time or effort into a relationship it will fail... think about the time and effort that you put into an online relationship... if you devoted that time and same effort into your other half then both of you would likely be quite happy and the relationship would flourish...

i guess i don't understand the question... you know, my 10 year old says he's "going out" with a girl... but i ask myself... where is he "going"?
i would like to say that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, UNTIL YOU GET THERE. i'm certain that you don't want to hurt your current partner. a good idea at this point is to stay away from the communication with this internet person... try to preoccupy yourself at the normal time that you are usually online, find a hobby.
i know i don't have to really answer your question... just the fact that you are asking makes me think you know the answer. the answer is inside of yourself. what ever your decision be prepared to live with the consequences...

I do. Although there is no physical contact, it's still cheating.

If you are giving someone else the time and attention, it's cheating. That belongs to your wife and wife alone.
Emotional cheating can do just as much damage.
