Jo,
first, you need to change the rubber piece.
then, you want to sharpen the blades by running
ice cubes with a little help of cold water.
then cut lemons or limes in two and throw them in the grinder
and finally, get a large box of baking soda,
pour it all,
pour a cup of distilled white vinegar
and let it sit overnight. It will bubble and sizzle, that's OK.
Next morning,
run hot water for about 1 minute,
and presto,
a clean smelling garbage disposal.
Do the ice once a week,
the lemon, lime, every time you can
the baking soda/vinegar at least twice a month.
And always run the full cycle, grind longer than you think
is necessary.
Try it and let me know if it works!

I use ammonia full strength. Make sure you have good ventalation. and keep the water running. Also I use a whole lemon or orange. You might have to cut the orange. There are products at the store that you can by. One is for dishwashers. It comes in a clear bottle, looks like dishwashing soap with a green label and top. Sorry can't remember the name of it but it cuts the build up. Also viniger weekly will help about a 1/2 cup. These are just a few. You might go to jeeves or google and look.

Use a lemon or orange - peel and all. Cut them up and then throw them down the garbage disposal. Baking soda also works. Try white vinegar for the smell.
If all of that fails, pull out the plug and dismantle it. There may be something 'stuck' in the mechanism.

Grinding food like oranges and lemons is a quick fix, but they get stuck and rot and stink!! First thing is regular running of ice cubes down the disposal. You should be doing this once a week. It helps break up stuck food. Never run your disposal with hot water, always cold.

Try pouring a whole box of Arm & Hammer baking soda down. Or white vinegar. I got a free sample of disposer care & it helped too. Check out the source below for more information. Best product for me was the baking soda & it's cheapest. 50 cents a box.

At Ace Hardware they have this killer stuff called"disposer Care"--garbage disposer cleaner. You run water down the drain. drop it in and turn on the disposal. Buy IT! IT WORKS! and it's under four dollars.

They make these pellets - I found them at the grocery store - you drop into the disposal and turn it on to grind it up. It's got gel or something inside that disinfects and cleans it. Or, you might have something stuck in there that's rotting and you should call a repairman or someone you know who's handy to open it up and check.

1) Ice will break loose things that are stuck in the blades.
2) Coffee grounds will help too.
3) Orange or grapefruit peel will finish the job.
