Write down all your expenses in a notebook, in different items, house, car, going out, clothes.... after a couple of months you really know where you are burning your money, and then you can stop spending it.

turn off your cable, your internet, your satellite, all the extras on your home phone, all the extras on your cell phone, cut your minutes back to the minimum or (gasp!) turn it off entirely.

go to the grocery store with a list, instead of a fast food or restaurant. learn how to eat healthy (hint: stick to the outside walls of the store). Be sure to eat _Before_ you go to the store.

sell your car that you're still making payments on, drive an old (reliable) beater that you paid for in cash and has minimum insurance. don't worry about the gas mileage because your saving that monthly payment.

at work, get the manager to help you re-do your W-4 form so you won't get a tax refund - that means you get more in your paycheck.

cut up your credit cards, if you need plastic use debit that's tied to your checking, and get the theft protection. Or, just use cash only like the answer above.

mostly I would recommend planning, assuming you have a savings or checking account you simply need to decide on a budget. and then follow it. the most basic method would be to allot yourself a certain amount of cash for a few different categories say : food, housing/rent/mortgage, transportation/car/gas, entertainment. etc. and then take that cash amount and put it in a separate envelope for each category and then when that money is gone its gone and you don't spend anymore there until the next month.

Have money deducted from your paycheck and put directly into savings, in a credit union if your workplace has one. If you don't see it, you're not so likely to spend it. Make it as inconvenient as possible to get at.
