I own the CDs - I just want the music in mp3 format for the iPod. But Windows Media Player gives the albums nearly useless directory names: Unknown Album (6-20-2006 7-49-05 PM).
and equally cryptic song named: 01 Track 1.mp3. Is there a way to make WMP any smarter about this? Or should I just find a better ripper?

I downloaded WinAmp and it is seeing the names ok. Kenny Burell's Blue Muse is the album. WMP couldn't figure out Pat Matheney or any other. It looks like in Windows Media Player in Tools/Options/Privacy you have to check Update Music Files by retrieving media info from the internet. And then that works too. Winamp freebie seems slower than the Windows Media Player so I'll probably go back to it. Thanks!

If your CDs are ones you bought from HMV or BestBuy or something - then there is something definitly wrong with your Windows Media Player; however, if your CDs are ripped/burned, it's quite possible(99% of the time) that the album is "Unknown" and that the songs will appear as "Tracks". But I, personally, use iTunes or Winamp. iTunes is just a lot quicker and the Titles show up for legal CDs for sure.

Windows does this to comply with protective rights for music. What I do is connect to the Internet browser through Windows media player and search for album or artist names and it will change the names for you automatically....but of course you have to do this manually for every CD you rip.
