I lived in a ghetto when I was a kid. my family was like a couple sprinkles of salt in a shaker of pepper. at first, I was pretty scared. my mom did me a great favor though. she locked me out of the house all day long which forced me to get to know the other kids in the neighborhood. once I was able to get through the tough act that some of the kids put on, I found that the kids in the poor neighborhood were just like the kids in the neighborhood I lived in before. they liked playing and doing the same things as me. they were funny, kind, generous. don't fall for all those stereotypes. get to know the people you live around. show them respect, be friendly, and do not show fear. you will make friends. and you will be surprised by how much the kids in your new neighborhood are just like you.
good luck
blessed be

Don't feel offended - it's not a black thing ... its not even a raciest thing ... I used to live in a neighborhood like that ... then I hit it big and now live in a neighborhood that has a real mix of people that care about their property and investment

I have black neighbors here that I get along great with and they say that they hate blacks that bring down the neighborhood by hanging out intimidating the neighbors and visitors to the area.

So it's not just whites that notice ...

I think by you saying "talking andacting the way 'they' act" is a harsh stereotype. But none the less in a "ghetto" neighborhood, a majority of African Americans are involved with violence.

I'm sure if financially my family is down and my mother felt it was best for us to move in a certian neighborhood I would most likely trust her judgement. But if you are worried about your saftey then confront her and ask her if there are other options.

I did just that for a while. It wasn't ONLY blacks, but it was a bad neighborhood, rapidly deteriorating into a crack neighborhood. I lost almost everything I had invested in my house, but I suppose it was almost worth it to get away from the vandalism, theft, neighborhood brawls and frequent police presence, which was not enough to prevent almost daily damage to my home and/or car. I'm sorry that your mother would put you in such a situation, and hope that your surroundings improve.

I've done it.
The key is to just try and chill out and assimilate a little.

And try not to get shot, mugged, or creamed.

Your av says you're a girl, so I don't know if you'll have to do the same kind of defending against offenders, but, well...

Let me put it this way:

Wherever you are, that's where you are.

When I lived in the ghetto, I dated a puerto rican chick and busted about 3 noses.
If you can't bust noses, bust groins.

I don't think I would be comfortable. I have lived in mixed neighborhoods and have not had a problem but a ghetto either black or white would be scary to me.

my college is in a prominently black neighborhood with high crime. sometimes it frightens me, but i know how to stay safe. you can't walk the streets alone, you must keep all doors and windows locked at all times, etc. if you use common sense, its not that bad, but if you let your guard down, its easy to find yourself in a bad situation. i don't think youre racist. i have several black friends, but i see how the average 'ghetto' black person acts. there are some very nice people who live around me, but there are also people who show me no respect at all.

The great paradox of this country has become that the blacks are far more racist than the whites. Moved to the South a couple of years ago, totally blew me away. Nasty 'tudes all the way around. And if you in anyway stand up to the crap, they call YOU a racist.

RACISTS COME IN ALL COLORS

I'm not racist....at all. But I chose to live where I wanted, and I would never choose to live where you are living. I live in a neighborhood full of all cultures and races.
