I think it may be my AVG or my zone alarm. It takes forever to boot up, it reminds me of my first computer which required the boot-up floppy disk.

I keep checking it for viruses.
and I only get the java trojan horse
which I get rid of an it comes back as part of yahoo

sigh

goto programs >>> run and type in "msconfig" where u can control the start up files.... disable the avg and zone alarm pro.... as on the start up..(RESTART AND, CLICK ON DONOT SHOW THIS MESSAGE WHEN IT STARTS UP AGAIN). when u switch on the system try to manually open these files(AVG AND ZONE ALARM) this may help ur start up time a lot and the java trojan horse is related to sun java just ingnore it avg goes crazy some times, u should always remember to delete detected viruses this might help u to get rid of the error but of keeps coming back again it is an LSP and any attempt to remove it may lead to format the whole system take care cheers

It is probably not your AVG or Zone Alarm. I use both.
First off: Go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Internet Options
and delete ALL Cookies and delete ALL Files including Offline Files. Be sure the option is checked.
>Go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/Ad-Aware Download and install SE Personal Edition 1.06
It is freeware and works with all Windows OS
It is rated 5 STARS by CNet
>Next, go to
http://www.download.com
search for Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
download and install.
It is freeware and works with all Windows OS
>Next, while in www.download.com, search for CCleaner
download and install
It is freeware and works with all Windows OS
**I have been using all 3 programs for years and have never had any trouble or problems.
Now...shut down the computer and wait a couple of minutes.
Restart your computer.
Click on Start
Click Find or Search
Click Files & Folders
In the Named field, type *.tmp and check Find Now
If any files are found, click Edit and Select All.
Click File, Delete and Yes, you do want to delete the files.
> Empty the Recycle Bin
Open your Ad-Aware SE program and check
'Perform Smart System Scan' click on Next
after the scan, click on next and delete all entries found.
Open Spybot Search and Destroy, run a scan and delete all entries found.
Open CCleaner and put a check mark under all entries for Windows and Applications (except under Applications, DO NOT PUT A CHECK MARK in Your Virus or Firewall Programs.
At the bottom , click on Analyze, let the program run then click on Run Cleaner.
>> Now click on ISSUES - This is a registry cleaner key. Click on Scan for Issues.
Before you run fix selected issues, do a backup of your registry using the backup link at top of program then click on fix selected issues.
>>Shut down computer and wait a couple of minutes.
Restart your computer and run a Scan Disk with Auto Fix Errors checked.
> Shut down computer and Restart
Now, End Task on everything except Explorer and Systray
Then go to Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / DeFrag and let the DeFrag run until it completes. During this time, leave the computer on but it is okay to shut off the monitor using the on/off button for the monitor. This could take some time to complete.
When DeFrag is complete, shut down the computer and wait about 3 minutes. Restart the computer. It should run much better now.
*****This is a lot and will take a lot of effort but believe me, it is well worth your time and trouble and you will not have to download and install the 3 programs again, but be sure to check for updates. Also, at least once a week, do the DeFrag thing.
Good Luck.....

Have you cleaned out your cookies lately? Just click on run, insert the words temporary internet files or cookies and when they appear, delete all except the dat file. That always helps. You also may want to defragment. I found that also speeds it up a little.

The reason it is slow to boot up is because you have too many programs loading up or a very large one, or both. With the little info you give I don't know which one/s it is. Uninstall what you don't use. Then, defrag.

Might have a virus, might need more RAM. How old is it?

I would install a free SW that may detect if you have any virus in your system. Then try to clean it. Another option could be to reimage or install security patches.

Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>delete cookies. is easier

then defrag

Download this and use it. It cleans just about everything.

AVG catches almost nothing. Try TrendMicro's housecall (www.trendmicro.com) and Lavasoft's AdAware (www.lavasoft.com). Both are free.
