I need to justify a purchase. We are inclined to choosing 3940 but cannot make a quantitative comparison. Need the printer for an office of around 5. Need fast, good quality prints for office documents. Color prints not very frequent. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! =)

Epsons have trouble with their ink cartridges. There is currently a lawsuit against them.

The HP 3940 is ok, but the 5440 packs a little more punch. Actually, I would prefer the 5940. It's a little more, but it's built better, it's faster, and you'll get a cheaper cost per print. The 3940 that you are looking at, as well as the Epson, will give you a high cost per page. Also, if you do any amount of printing, you'll find yourself changing the cartridges out more often than you would like.

The HP printers, unlike the Epsons, have the printheads built into the print cartridges. This will add greatly to the life of your printer. HP printers are known for their longevity.

Office Depot and Office Max usually carry both the 5940 and the 5440. The 5440 will soon be replaced by the D4100 series. Personally, if it were me, I would buy the 5940. It's nicer, the cartidges hold a lot more ink (and aren't too much more than the 3940), and will last you a lot longer.

If you have to choose one of them, go with the HP, but I'm not sure either one would be suitable for your needs. Neither of these machines are really that good. The HP 3940 is an entry level model that really isn't on par with the standard Deskjets that HP sells, and the Epson C45 is basically just a big mystery. Also, neither of these machines are meant for frequent usage. They are meant for personal use, so having five people share them might not be a good idea.

If price is a factor and you are limited to these two, then go with the HP. But, if you can spend a little more, I would go with an entry level laser printer. They will be about $50, but if you aren't going to print in color, they will work a whole lot better for you.

the ink is expencive and gets used up fast so if you dont print much it probably wont be a problem but the hp if you live in a hot dry area and dont print every day the ink cartridge may dry out i personally like cannon even tho they ripped me off for my rebate the printers can be disassembled if theres a paper jam which is good because i had a printer and after i got all the paper out it would always suck more than one sheet it also closes to prevent dust or if you own a cat it keeps hair and your cat out

I have owned HP and Epson, and the latest HP units are much faster and quieter than Epson. The color printing is easier , sharper, faster, and quieter.
