Okay. You have to listen to me. Whoever the person is that told you to use tobacco in any way, shape, or form is wrong. Tomatoes are very susceptible to the tobacco mosaic virus. If you use tobacco sprays, you will probably lose your plants. If you have young grasshoppers, use Nolo Bait. Organic. Takes a while. Go catch yourself a couple dozen grasshoppers. Put them in the blender with water, maybe a quart. Let this sit a day or two. Strain and spray. Works every time. Are you sure its grasshoppers and not tomato hornworm? The worms match the color of the plant perfectly. They have a little black horn on their heads. If its hornworms, contact me and I will tell you what to do. Good Luck.

Semaspore Grasshopper Bait
Semaspore Bait contains Nosema locustae, a naturally occurring grasshopper disease. After eating Semaspore grasshoppers become sick, eat less, and begin to die. The disease spreads to healthy grasshoppers through cannibalism. In 2-4 weeks, 50% of the population will die, and most survivors will be infected to continue spreading the disease. Infected survivors eat 75% less than healthy grasshoppers and lay fewer eggs. Apply 1 lb. Semaspore Bait / acre, when grasshoppers are young (1/4" - 1/2" long). Heavy infestations may require repeat applications. Semaspore has a 6 week shelf life - 5 months if refrigerated. Safe for people, pets and the environment. OMRI Listed for use in organic production.

Organic Pest Control
There are a few different ways to keep pests out of your garden without using chemicals. One way is to add beneficial insects to your garden. Not all insects are bad to have in the garden. Some insects can actually help you to keep destructive insects under control. The praying mantis, for example will eat caterpillars and grasshoppers which are capable of doing a lot of damage to your garden plants literally over night. Some other beneficial insects are the ladybug and the robber fly. These insects are very valuable to have in your garden.
Another option you can choose if you don't want to use chemicals in your garden is to make a home made spray to use on your plants. These sprays can be made from natural ingredients. One such spray is made by mixing ten parts water to one part dish soap. This mixture can be applied with a watering can or put in a garden sprayer. Apply to the entire plant. This is one time when you will want to get the whole plant wet. Apply this spray to your plants early in the morning. Another home made bug repellant is made by soaking an entire pouch of chewing tobacco in two gallons of water. Remove the tobacco and put the remaining juice in a garden sprayer and apply to all plant surfaces.

Chemicals or even organic methods to kill pests have to do with body size. Just like it takes more to get a large guy drunk than a tiny girl drunk so it goes too with pests. Grasshoppers are really difficult to kill with a product because of their large for a bug size. Bugs have to eat the stuff to die. I have found that because they are cold blooded(or something like that) they move slowly in the morning. So far I can't grab them with my hands. Ew! But If you can smack them off your plants onto the ground before the sun hits them it will be easy to then stomp on them quickly = dead. If it was sunny they would fly very fast away before you could stomp.
Good luck.
