Founder is an inflammation of the laminae of the foot characterized by a passive congestion of the laminae with blood. When this happens the sole is dropped and flat and is usally very flakey. The hoof wall grows very rapidly. There are many different causes for founder but the common underlying cause is the release of endotoxins by gram negative bacteria. Here are a few causes: Overeating can cause laminitis, Overwork or road founder is caused by concussion from a hard surface. meaning if a horse is not conditioned to excercise riding it for several hours may cause founder. Water Founder is caused when an overheated horse drinks large amounts of cold water so make sure a horse is cooled sown before it drinks. Postparturient laminitis is caused by a uterine infection, Grass Founder is common among overfat horses that are grazed on lush pastures for too long same as overeating, and then theres miscellaneous causes of founder which include viral respiratory infections, drugs, eating black walnut shavings, and overeating beet tops. When a horse foundersits very painful a heavy ring wil form around the wall of the foot for the rest of its life. They need corrective shoeing. In several cases, seperation of the laminae, rotation of the third phalanx or distal phalanx and penetration of the third phalanx through the sole may occur. When this happens the horse is usually lame for the rest of its life.

Lamnitis, also called Founder, is basically when the hoof wall seperates from the cofin bone. ( the main bone) This is often very painful and can be fatal. When caught early horse can somtimes be made sound enough to be comfortable in the pasture. Some barefoot poeole claim to have some sucess in totally cureing some types of founder given enough time, the right conditions, and some speacail barefoot trim, but I have never met anyone who has tried this so i can't vouch for its merits or not.

Founder can be caused by over eating, putting a horse unused to grass on grass without proper adjustment time, high sugared spring or post- frost grass (usually not a danger unless horse has previously foundered or is already on a high sugar diet) Working to hard or long on hard ground, and other things.

Do a search on founder or ask your farrier, vet, or other knowledgeable horse person. For information on the bare foot treatment go to the founder page on http://www.barefoothorse.com/

It is deadly.

Early stages known as laminitis - it is responsible for the deaths of Secretariat, Sunday Silence and many more. It is what Barbaro is battling.
As it progresses the coffin bone in the foot rotates. The sole drops...and once that starts there is no return. Severe cases the coffin rotates through the bottom of the hoof and there is no choice but euthanasia.

There are various causes - too much rich grass in the spring, too much riding on hard surfaces, injury, stress, getting into large amounts of grain, drug withdrawals are just a few things that can cause founder.
Prevention - common sense. Don't run the horses on roads, blacktop, cement, rocks. Don't turn a horse from a stall onto rich grass all the time. Keep feed rooms locked securely.
Once affected it is irreversable.

when a horse founders it can be caused from different things. Look up foundering in horses and it will give you some good advice as to how severe and what you can do for it. Make sure you have him in good stable conditions especially after riding. keep a clean stall with plenty of dry bedding. a softer hoof can be harmful to him. keep the frog clean, that is the y shape in the hoof. If you can't do it a farrier will.
good luck

Founder is very dangerous often fatal. Hooves deteriate, often time coffin bones rotate, making it almost impossible for the horse to stand. Commom sense leads to prevention, feed at regular times, don't over feed, be sure hay is good & water fresh & clean. See that there is no posssibility that the horse can get into the feed & just eat & eat. Be sure & cool your horse out completely after exercising. A number of good horse/vet sites can give you all the information you need.

Usually horses founder when they eat too much. It sounded like you already had the right advice from others, so I won't repeat them. Good luck.
