This will work.....Call DIRECTV and tell them you want to cancel your account. They will ask you why. Tell them that you have an offer to switch to DISH. They'll give you the upgrade. They are currently charging new customers $99 for the DVR and then sending them a $99 rebate so basically they are giving them away.

Go into Circuit City and buy the DVR. It is $99 plus tax. You will then get an $100 mail in rebate with your first month's bill. Hence, making it free.

It looks like they aren't giving on away free yet, but for $99 dollars. Still not a bad deal.

Also, if you have no luck at first, just hang up and call again. Apparently it makes a difference who you talk to.
