In Israel:
Hezbollah terrorists operating from the south of Lebanon raided Israel and kidnapped Israeli soldiers. They also killed a tank crew. They brought these soldiers back into Lebanon to hold them for ransom, they want Israel to release terrorists from it's prisons. Hezbollah also launched hundreds of rockets given to them by Syria and Iran into northern cities in Israel. These rockets are landing in residential areas in Israel, not anywhere near military targets.
In Gaza, a similar event occurred when Hamas (Palestinian terrorists and a governing Palestinian party) crossed thru the border fence between Israel and Gaza illegally and kidnapped an Israeli soldier. Israeli soldiers moved into Gaza to find their soldier. Hamas has been barraging Israel with rockets from Gaza.
Israel decided to defend itself. The attacks came from sovereign Lebanese soil, and Hezbollah has been allowed to control southern Lebanon, and even having influence over Lebanon itself. Thus, Israel attacked Lebanon, targeting caches of rockets, terrorist compounds, and Hezbollah leadership HQ. They also targeted roads and airports while blockading by sea. This is to prevent Hezbollah from moving weapons and soldiers. Israel shows restraint, only attacking targets key to achieving their goal of eliminating Hezbollah. Lebanese civilian casualties are counted in the hundreds, however many of these "civilians" are terrorist militants hiding behind civilian populace.
Syria and Iran have condemned Israel for their attack, however, both Syria and Iran support Hezbollah with money, weapons, and people. Really what it is going on is, Iran and Syria have engaged in a continuous war with Israel through their Hezbollah organization so as not to take the responsibility.
It's sad that the Lebanese people are being caught in the middle. Hezbollah is using them as human shields to try to prevent retaliation for their continued harrassment of Israel. Hopefully in the end after Israel removes the threat from Hezbollah, Lebanon will be free from the influence of Syria that is causing so much strife and tragedy.
