There are thirty-five states with a Springfield. It has to be a state which has the following:
mountains
a desert (I.E. The Alkali Flats)
is bound on at least one side by an ocean/bay & has a harbor
a nuclear power plant
cold enough to permit snowfall
hot enough to sustain a heat wave
an Air Force Base
an Army post
a Navy base or Naval Reserve base
a racetrack or speedway
a dog track
a horse track
an attraction similar to Sea World
a national forest
hicks like Cletus the slack-jawed yokel
Any landlocked state such as Missouri can't qualify. Even Grandpa Simpson won't recognize it as a state.
Two states have everything listed above. They are California & Texas. To make it more intriguing, Texas has TWO Springfields. There needs to be a tie-breaker. The only one I can think of would have to be the mountains. Texas really doesn't have any serious mountains per se'. Although the foot of the Rockies does begin at the far west tip of the state.
Here is how Springfield, California appears on a map:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=search&countryid=250&addtohistory=&country=US&address=&city=springfield&state=ca&zipcode=&historyid=&submit=Get+Map
It appears to be far north enough in the state to have snow.
I say California is home to the Simpsons.
Of course, Springfield is supposed to represent Anytown USA. ;-)

The Simpsons episode Beyond the Laughter, said they are a northern Kentucky family. But who can know for sure.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behind_the_Laughter
At the end of the episode (while the Simpson family is sitting on a small hill), the narrator states: "The Simpsons' bitter past was forgotten, and now the future looks brighter than ever for this Northern Kentucky family." This assumes that the Simpsons family lives in Springfield, Kentucky; It should also be noted that some fans argue this episode was non-continual, so the line should not be taken seriously. On a second airing, the line was changed to state the family lives in Missouri rather than Kentucky. Both versions can be seen in syndication, giving credence to the theory that the line is meant solely to confound fans about the town's location even further.[1]
The "scene" from an upcoming episode, which was meant to be a joke, was in fact used in a later episode. The audio from the scene was reanimated in Simpsons Tall Tales.

The Simpson on FOX Sundays live in Springfield, IL. That is the capital of that state and in the show they live in the capital city of the state. It can be confusing though, there one in MO, PA. CT.,RI.WA and probably many more states

They purposely don't let you know that. Sometimes, they live near the mountains, sometimes near the ocean. This would let out Ohio or Illinois. But sometimes they live near big farming & ranching areas, which would eliminate Springfield, MA.
It's ambiguous on purpose. You'll never know.

No one knows...... it's just Springfield, USA..........
Like Salem for Days of Our Lives..... it's just Salem, USA - no state.
Log, I'm gonna look for that sign you're talking about when the show comes on in 6 minutes, & I'll be back......
Just like I thought...... no sign. They don't live in the capital because the kids are always taking field trips to Capital City.

I think it is Illinois. Because I remember one of the characters( I don't remember who) but they said the name of a city that is in Illinois. I live in Ohio. (and there is no city in Ohio with that name.) and there is a Springfield,Ohio

I keep changing my mind on this but for a while I was convinced it was KY until I realized that they either live near an ocean or a great lake.
