The blue eye gene is a recessive trait. Our genes come to us via our parents one from each so we have 2 sets of genes for everything. If the grandparents passed down a blue eye gene and a brown eye gene on both sides, both parents would have brown eyes, as brown is the dominant gene. If in turn both parents passed on their blue eye gene, then your friend would have blue eyes, although both parents have brown.

Our kids (and they're definitely ours) were born with blue eyes. And they darkened over time. Eye color is more complicated than a one-gene trait. As are many "racial" characteristics. Sometimes a string of unlikely pairings occur and a child can look very different in some way than their biological parents.

Partly it is mathematics - one in a million kids will look like, well, one in a million.

And in other attributes, it demonstrates how genetic "impure" all peoples are. We think of a people living in one place for thousands of years, but just in my own family tree, hundreds of years ago, people were migrating, getting blown off course, etc thousands of miles away, settled and procreated.

The gene for blue eyes could've been recessive in one or both of the parents and just combined in the right manner this time.

its more than likely that one of your friend's parents carry the recessive "blue eyes" gene. It's not something that would happen in every generation. Kind of like twins, not every generation of a "twin prone" family has twins. Its in there but shows up eventually down the line.

that, or shes adopted lol

the blue eye gene is the recessive gene. it can run in the family for generations without making an appearance. both parents can have brown eyes, but if they both have the recessive blue gene, their child could have blue eyes.
