In a simple answer: religion. Bush brings up religion in his speeches, sometimes quoting the Bible verbatim. He dwells on issues such as gay marriage and abortion which will never be solved during his presidency or any other really.
I suggest you read What's the Matter With Kansas by Thomas Frank. It thoroughly explains the "logic" behind blue collar voters.

the reason for not raising the minimum wage is to create more low income jobs, so those sneaks do that to act like they're being supportive of the poorest of the poor.
they are also big on family values, which is another thing that bush et al act as though they've cornered the market on.
finally, i think it has to do with the american dream. everyone in this country believes that they are moving up a class notch any day now, including the poorest of the poor. therefore, policies that are designed for wealthier classes appeal even to the poor. and policies like welfare that spend tax money on OTHER people ("not me" they think, "i'll be off welfare by next year") can be unpopular with the poor. i read that somewhere; i'm not making it up.

how many poorest of the poor do you know? I was raised in that culture. My parents were on welfare, they were white trash all the way. I'm talking my clothes came from charity, I ate pinto beans for supper every night, and I got nothing for Christmas. I know a thing or two about the mindset of America's poor. And lemme tell you, there were no Republicans in those trailer parks. My family, my friends, everyone was Democrat. They hated rich Republicans who gave tax breaks to their friends.
As for raising minimum wage, really what good would that do in our society? A cashier makes an extra dollar an hour, she gets docked five hours of her work schedule. I've seen it. Pizza delivery guys make an extra dollar per hour, Papa John's tacks on an extra charge to the customer. I saw that too. In my state, minimum wage just got raised to 6.15. We're not holding our breath to see if it works.
And as for the whole religion aspect of it, what's that? All poor people are conservative? All of them are Christians? I've met a LOT of poor people who were Wiccan, Satanist, Atheist, everything else.
Yesterday it was rich oil stock holders support Bush. Today it's white trash poor people. What will it be tomorrow?

Hon, why do you people keep insisting that the poor and the uneducated and southerners are the ones supporting Bush? I am none of the first three, but I am a supporter.
Seems to me the poorest of the poor are Democrats, despite the fact that The dems tried to keep them from voting for centuries. The less the dems do for them, the more they seem to support them. I don't get that, either.

your statement is false all the way around. Most intelligent people understand that there are three branches of government. Legislative, judicial, and executive. The president doesn't have sole discretion on bills that are submitted. Study up on your politics before you make a ridiculous statement like that....and PS....most of Bush's fans have never been poor, welfare recipients. Most people on welfare dont even vote anyway, so who the hell cares what they think. If you dont vote, you dont have a voice.

Because the poorest of the poor always bear the brunt of increased taxes. e.g. Cigarettee taxes, fuel taxes, payroll taxes.
Raising the minimum wage would have dramaticallly increased the pressure for illegal immigration, hurting the poor here.
Your question is nicely misleading.

Read "What's the Matter with Kansas?" by Thomas Frank. If you make under 250,000 dollars a year, voting for a republican is like a chicken voting for colonel sanders. It simply doesn't make sense. They get people to vote for them by pretending to be tough on terror (when really big on their buddies' pocketbooks), and making people mroe concerned whether two guys kiss versus whether they can afford to put food on their table. It is illogical, but we live in a mad, mad world.

You know... not everyone thinks about whats best for them. Some people think about whats best for their country, and I promise you that doesn't mean they are dumb, rednecks, inbred, gunnuts, Jesus freaks, or anything else... maybe, just maybe, that someone who is lower class can actually think for them selves and think about whats best for the country. I know most people are sheep, simply "bahhhhhing" back what they hear or read in the news, but.... surprisingly enough, I know that intelligence doesn't necessarily have economic boundaries.

the poorest of the poor DON'T support anyone. They don't pay taxes. You don't pay what you don't have - and with EIC some get money back they didn't pay. Those who DID pay - who make a higher income - are the ones despised for PAYING TAXES.
