Actually gentle giant is correct on both counts, although for the life of me I can't imagine why anyone would want to make a smaller engine... bore out a 400 .060 over with the original crank nets you a 413 cu.in, why go smaller?

For Mack S, Chevy never built a 383. A 383 is made by taking a crank from a smallblock 400, grinding down the main journals .100, and dropping it in a 350 block bored out .030. a 400 crank in a std bore 350 nets you a 377, in a .040 over a 385, and .060 over a 388.

I wasn't aware Chevrolet made a 383 c.i. engine. You talking' bout a '283' ci engine? Chevy made those in the late '50s and '60s. It would be a simple math equation.
To start with, you would divide the c.i by 8, if it were an 8 cyl. engine which would result in the c.i / cylinder. From there, you would solve the lateral surface area of each cylinder, and while doing so, the diameter of the cylinder would emerge, which would be the 'bore'. You find the stroke if you get that deep into math and want to really know.

4.030 bore by 3.75 stroke. You can buy a stroker crank in a 1 or 2 piece seal style for a 350 block.(ebay $200 and up) Most cranks or this type are external balance and need the 400 type harmonic balancer and flywheel. The stock 400 crank needs to be turned on the mains to fit the smaller 350 block. You can use your stock 350 rods(5.7") If you buy the right pistons.Everything else will work , but you need to assemble everything before you have it balanced to make sure nothing needs trimmed or ground down to keep from hitting (.030 clearance)

The most common is a 0.030 over 350 block with a 400 3.75" crank. 4.030x3.75
It can also be made as a big bore .060 over 400 block with a 350 3.48" crank. 4.185x3.48
