England's below par performance can be attributed to their over reliance on the "Rooney Factor." Not only the media but even Sven himself seemed to believe that "England will win the World Cup because of Rooney." This over reliance on Rooney killed England. Engand is a very good team and they got some classy players but they committed a blunder by relying on Rooney. Rooney is a good striker but playing in a domestic league is way different than playing in international games. Rooney has not scored that many goals in the international outings for England. Owen, on the other hand, is a genuine striker who has scored goals for England many times. Another thing, I never understood was why Eriksson picked Walcott over other strikers ? It bewilders me when I think of it. Just because someone is young it does not necessarily mean that they are the best. The example is France: their average age was 33 but they went to final. Any comments?

I don't think we took our best squad to the finals this year, Why take Walcott? a young player with no Premiership experience who even when needed wasn't given the oppertunity to play, we had players such as Defoe Vassel Beattie Even players such as Ameobi & Johnson would have been a vast improvement, at 1st i was scepticle about binging Aaron lennon although he did perform and provd me wrongbut i think Shaun Wright Phillips would also have added a great deal to our campaign as would have Ledley King.

I do hope for our next finals Mclaron Takes a more competent squad maybe even include Alan Smith in his new role as an MC as he is ferocious and really bossess a midfield I rate him very highly.

Rooney is still young. By the time 2010 comes around he will be a more mature and well rounded footballer. He does have talent and it is not his fault that so many pinned the hopes of their WC on his young shoulders. The types of incidents that occurred with Rooney and C Ronaldo for that matter are due to their youth and the fact they are thrown into International football at such young ages. And Poor Theo Walcott, you cannot blame that young lad for anything that Sven and other selectors decided to do. That's part of my point I guess, they take these promising and talented young kids and expect them to perform, behave and produce wins like seasoned veterans of the game which they are not.

Owen hurt his knee in the game previous, he couldn't play against Portugal.
Rooney is a young, ignorant, hot-TEMPERED player.
ENGLAND is my all-time favorite team, don't get me wrong, but how has Rooney contrubuted? Oh yeah, by stomping on some guy's crotch and getting a red card. Thanks Rooney for that. Thanks Beckham for coming out in the 1st half. You both really screwed England over this time. Way to go!

fugutastic & elgil: THE WHOLE DAMN ENGLAND FOOTBALL TEAM HAS MORE TALENT IN THEIR PINKY THAN YOU WILL EVER HAVE. England is damn good. He is not mistaken. So, SHUT UP. Now you've made me all MAD. Thanks.

I think Rooney did a pretty good job (save the red card incident) every time he came on the field.
If something, he was relying on Owen, when Owen got injured he changed his formation from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1. Instead of betting on his replacement strikers he gave most of the responsibility to Lampard and Gerard who were not shooting on target.

Land of Eng are not a very good team. They are overrated. Look at Lampard--couldn't hit the net if his life depended on it. Owen is over the hill sadly.

Picking Walnut was just stupid.

Face facts, Shrek is not really that good. It's hype by English press. They have that island mentality and overrate their own league.

You are mistaken, England didn't have a very good team, just mediocre. But everybody else was also mediocre. You can't pick a team or a player above average out of the 32 teams.

hello friend you are greatly mistaken, nowadays more emphasis is given on club soccer rather than international matches .england is a victim of the same, england might have got big names in their squad but that doesn't help, the more popularity a player gains the more responsibility e has to burden, wayne rooney shouldn't have shown his frustration to his manchester united clubmate c.ronaldo. morever from next world cup engl;and should bring more players who are good penalty takers and those who play for their country first and club next.

Rooney is good. But his stupidity and the fact that Beckman hurt him self cost England the game.
