Use a crumpled up ball of aluminum foil as it will not scratch the sole plate of the iron. You probably have a mineral deposit buildup in the iron. Run a 1/4 cup of vinegar through the iron set for steam. Once the iron is up to temperature hold the iron as you would do to iron but hold it in the air moving it forward and backward as you are ironing the air. Have an old towel or heavy cloth below to catch any dripping as you will have mineral deposits dripping out and occasionally wipe the iron in the cloth. You can't just let the iron set there or the steam chamber and steam holes will not be properly cleaned out. This should take a few minutes and when the mineral deposits stop coming out you are done. After cooling the iron dump the remaining vinegar out and fill the iron with water. Dump that water out and you are ready for some trouble free ironing again.

Maybe run vinegar water through it or you may have to clean it when it is still a bit hot. The heat of the iron is probably melting whatever it is, that's why it's coming off. Iron's are pretty chaep these days, don't go through too much work!
