About a month ago, the hardrive on my computer broke down. Someone came a few days later and fixed it, and since then everything's been fine. (We're going to get a new harddrive soon though.)
But the only thing that's not working are the speakers. I can hear static on it, or you might call it a dead noise. Anyway I can tell it's on, because the green light is on. Both speakers are also plugged in. But I'm not getting any sound, and I've tried everything I can think of. Suggestions?

Do you have an icon near the clock that lets you adjust the speaker volume? If so, click that and see if someone muted the sound. If not, go to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio devices and look there for checkboxes.

Do you have the correct wire plugged into the correct port on your sound device at the back of your computer? Try moving the plug to another port to be sure you have the right port. While you are at it, try gently - gently - wiggling the plug in the port, as sometimes the port becomes damaged. If you have a sound device that is not on the mainboard, but is separate, you will have to open the case and see if it is seated in its slot properly.

Also, you mention that someone fixed your hard drive. Usually, they mechanically and electically work or they don't and there is no fixing them. If you mean that it was reformatted, then I suspect that whoever did this did not install the sound card drivers.

If you don't have a separate sound card, get the cd that came with your mainboard out and find the sound card drivers and install them. If you have a separate sound card, find the cd that came with that and install the drivers.

you may need to reinstall the driver for your audio... go to device manager then click on your sounds video games etc.. make sure that there are no yellow ?'s marks because that would mean that your audio driver needs to be reinstalled which can be done off from the internet by searching for whatever sound card you have in...

check the system sound board to see if there muted.

Or drivers might be bad/gone after the crash. Find out your sound card brand and model and download current drivers.

Or your sound card is dead, buy a new one.

Go to control panel and then go to "sounds and audio devices" You can check there to see if any of your hardware is not working properly. On the hardware tab you can select each piece of hardware individually and run a trouble shooter on it.

Try plugging in earphones (that work) instead and if there's sound maybe your speakers broke.
