I'm in the National Guard, and have to shine my boots once a month and two weeks during the summer. Our secret is to use KIWI brand polish. Also you need to work it in good with the applicator and give it time to dry off.(ussually the time it takes to apply polish to the other boot) When buffing, use a good quality soft brush and barely touch the boot or shoe in a rapid back and forth motion.
Another thing I did when I was in AIT was to take them into the boot shine guy,and after he polished them, he used a sealer thaat made them to where you could almost see your reflection. I guess once you get a good base on them, everything afterward is easy.
Some boots/shoes don't polish up too well either. I have one pair of combat boots that, no matter how much time I spend on them, they look nowhere as good as my first pairs from Basic. They are a different brand.
Alcohol and a lighter? You might just end up with no shoes!

put on a good oil based shoe polish. Next, take a lighter or a match and let the flame touch the leather that has just been polished. after doing this enough times the leather becomes super slick and shines like diamonds. it almost becomes like patent leather.

First, Use a wax that is high in carnuba (bees) wax. Melt it. Be careful it will be hot and a little messy. Apply the wax to the shoe. Let the wax on the shoe cool. Buff it out with a pair of stockings (pantyhose).

When you are done buffing, rub them with alcohol.
I had a shoe shine in Mexico once. Dude used alcohol and my work boots were shiny (like ice shiny) for a few months).
