So its easy to get lost in the shuffle at public colleges, but its just as easy to get lost in the 'perfect' little world of private colleges. If price wasn't the factor, would you choose to attend a lowly ranked private univeristy, or a highly ranked public one? That is, do you think the individual attention you recieve in private unis would balance out their mediocre education? Would the lack of this attention, and other tensions at a public university balance out its great education?

I went to a public University and have talked to people from Private ones and it seems like you get about the same education regardless of what school you're attending. The only thing that's going to make a difference is you pushing yourself. When you apply for whatever job you eventually want to do, the interviewer is going to care less where you went to school. They're going to look at your degree, your experience, and your GPA.

Do they both offer you the degree that you want?

Years ago I had to make the decision between private and public U. I opted for the public U because they offered the courses I wanted in a manner that was more conducive to the way I learn.

Some employers will give bonus points to an applicant based on the U they attended, but more and more that is going by the wayside. If you feel the public U is better suited to YOU, then that is the way to go.

I think your postulates are wrong. Quality has little to do with size and/or public/private status. University of California at Berkeley is a very big, very good, public university. Dartmouth University is a modest sized, very good, private university. Mount Saint Mary's University in Maryland is a very small (1300 students) private university of quite acceptable quality. Saint Mary's University of Maryland is a good small public university. I also know some Enormous State Universities that are miserable places to learn and some small private colleges that should close their doors. Start with the idea that size, and quality, and cost are orthogonal factors. (Look that word up; it's a good one.)

If I was the type of student who needed personal attention, I would choose the private school (assuming there were small class sizes). However, I thrive on independence and would do much better in a public school. I think if it's a choice between "crappy" and "great" I would choose "great" every time- regardless of the noun it modifies.

Visit both schools. Then ask yourself which one you could see yourself @ for 4 years. If you can see yourself @ both schools, then go for the public one.
