Breastfeeding *only* at that age. He is *not* ready for anything else. You have to wait until he is 6 months old. No baby--no matter how big, no matter how hungry, no matter how mature--is supposed to get *anything* other than breastfeeding (or formula) until he is at least 6 months old. You could be endangering his health for a lifetime by introducing anything before that age!!

At 3 1/2 months the baby should be on formula/breast milk only. Around 4 months is when baby rice cereal is introduced. A couple weeks after the cereal you can begin stage 1 baby foods. Call your babies Dr. to ask and make sure what you should do if you're not sure...that's what they are there for.
Cereal and baby food is given in addition to the formula...babies drink formula until they are 12 months old.

Most pediatricians consider 3 1/2 months too early to start cereal or baby food. Your baby should get all the nutrition he needs from formula or breastmilk. You SHOULD NOT be giving him cow's milk yet because infants often have troubling digesting cow's milk and it can cause bleeding in the stomach lining. It is recommended to wait until the baby is a year old before giving cow's milk. Here's a helpful chart: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/3/T030500.asp
There's also information on breastfeeding or choosing a formula on that site if you need it.

I think most pediatricians would tell you that a baby needs nothing more than breast milk or formula for at least the first four months. Between four to six months, most docs will tell you to introduce baby cereal into the diet, then the 'level one' foods like strained peas, carrots and fruits. Add one food at a time so in case there's an allergic reaction, you know what food caused it.

The only thing your baby needs right now is milk. You can give him a little bit of cereal, but that's all. He is a bit too young to start on baby food.

Check with your pediatrician or nurse first before starting your baby on solids.
You could start with baby cereal mixed with lots of milk. If he's only drinking milk right now & not solids, it would be wise to introduce only very small amounts of thin solids one at a time so you'll be able to know if he has any food allergies & don't upset his stomach. But check with the babies pediatrician first.

Now is a good time try him on thin baby cereals and Stage 1 foods; however, at this time they are just learning how to swallow so make sure he's swallowing food and not choking on it. You can also mix his cereal with fruit juice and water, you know, like half and half so it's not too sweet, but still doesn't taste like death in a jar.
Hope this helps,
Rebecca

I hope you mean formula not real milk. its time for baby cereal. you mix it with the formula. it takes some getting used to but they get used to it. start with one flavor of baby food a week that way if baby has an allergic reaction you know which food caused it. talk to pediatrician they know also.
