How does fencing compare as a combat sport compared to boxing? Does it require just as much training as the latter? And how do you start if there is no school in the area? I'm stuck between 2 great sports. Help!

Fencing requires just as much training as boxing. Just a different sort. Fencing is no longer a real 'combat' sport. Both require great amounts of cardio, endurance, speed, and agility. But, fencing requires more speed and thought (hence the reason it is called physical chess) while boxing requires being able to take much more physical abuse and requires more power (strength). While both are great sports, fencing requires more equipment ($).

In your situation i would choose whatever one did have a school/trainer nearby. If there is neither, then you could always pick up some books. unfortunately for both sports, books can only give you so much, you really need someone experienced.

I tried fencing in college, but not boxing.

fencing is much more about speed and agility. as soon as you score a hit, everything stops. where boxing is more about endurance and power, you dont want to just hit the guy, you want to hit him hard and keep going for 3 minutes.
