You want good seafood, go to Providence in LA. The chef there used to be at the Water Grill and the current chef at the Water Grill isn't quite as good.

Pricey, but then again, so is the Water Grill.

If you are more specific as to price range and location, I'll give more suggestions, but Water Grill downtown is probably the top of the line for seafood in LA. Also American can mean many things.

Gladstone's at Universal Citywalk for seafood. Daily Gill or California Pizza Kitchen for LA cuisine.

In Pasadena, The Calif. Pizza Kitchen or Oreilly's next door has goooood and affordable Lobster.
