I would agree that Francis, Marbury, and Van Horn aren't worth a contract of 3 years/$59 million. Pierce, though, is a much better caliber of player than those 3. That kind of money is similar to what Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwayne Wade commanded. In my opinon James and Wade are certainly deserving of it. But I don't think Anthony has quite earned it. I would even take Paul Pierce over him. It's suprising that Pierce got that much. I would have thought more in the ballpark of 3 years for $45 million.

He's the face of their team and it doesn't look like they're gonna need any of that money to sign Iverson
All the players you listed though annoy me so much. Steve Francis is not good and he never was! He was not good in Houston either!
The only way Keith Van Horn should be making millions of dollars is by being the lead hill person in a remake of Deliverance

They'll regret it but to be honest, what other choice does Ainge have?
He hasn't won anything in 3 years. (Yes, he is doing a very nice job of rebuilding but Boston fans are used to excellence)
If he lets Pierce go for nothing, they will clamor for Ainge's head.
Ideally, that money would be best spent continually stockpiling mid 1st round draft picks (which is what Ainge has been doing)
Ultimately though, the rebuilding has taken a bit longer than expected and Ainge needed to overspend to keep at least one all-star with this nicely developing group of youngsters.

$59 Million for 3 years absolutely is overpaid for Pierce. However, Boston have no choice in this matter based on following reason
1. Pierce really did great job in last season
2. Who can instead the role of Pierce in Boston? Iverson and Kobe are both not as good as Pierce for Boston.
3. If Boston not offer this to Pierce, what can Boston sign in from free market?
$59 million is absolutely overpaid, but there is no other option for Boston. For me, it just seems something like blackmail.

WHAT! Paul Pierce is worth that money. They are considering him as the best Boston Celtic ever(nba.com). He just needs some more scoring power on his team. Paul Pierce is clutch player. He's definitely not getting over paid.

Not as bad as what chicago are paying for 32 year old ben wallace. At that age surely he is in decline.
I think pierce is the best SF in the NBA (I know he is usually SG but he does play SF) but yes 59m is too much!

The trouble is, they're stuck with him. If they don't resign him, who do they have left?!?!?! Their recent drafts, besides Delonte West, have not produced any promising players. Until one of those picks can rise to All Star level, they have to keep Pierce or else they'll suck more than the Hawks.

They probably want to make sure they have at least one superstar quality player since they didn't get Iverson. The Celtics also think all of their new young players plus Pierce will lead them somewhere.

i take it your a piston fan based on your name, so why do you care what the celtics do, you dont watch them on a day to day basis you dont know whats going on over here, so who do you think you are going off on the celtics for signing their super star to a big contract?
sounds like someone is pissed about big ben signing with the bulls
and for those of you that think the celtics will regret it, it seems to me that pp gets better with age, wasnt last year the best year statiscally of his career
