Most cultures, it's the left. The theory of its origin states that this frees up the weapon hand (usually the right hand) to defend the lady if needed.

Other cultures have them walking behind. No comment there.

women were not allowed near the men until after the suffrage movement. the women stayed at home, cooked and looked after the kiddies. during world war 1 we did manage to steal the riveting jobs from the men, but as soon as they came home it was back to baking.

in the past women stud behind men, women had not athority or opinin. lucky things have changed and most people have exsepded the fact that women are just as good or BETTER then men in some things.
