I am doing this research for a Women's Studies class that I am participating in and your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

How do you feel about the ads in women's magazines that constantly talk about losing weight and gaining the "perfect" body? Do you think that it lowers self esteem for girls that do not look like that? Also, do you think that it would cause more eating disorders pressuring girls to be skinnier?

They disgust me and I think they're ridiculous. As an adult, I wonder what kind of adults believe in those silly, and sometimes dangerous weight-loss gimmicks.

I think all that stuff contributes to body image issues for little girls and adolescent girls. The more crap they see about how wonderful it is to be thin and "perfect," the more they'll think about it as they grow older.

Horrifying!

It just goes to show you that our Patriarchal society still believes that women have "problems" and need to constantly work on them.
You don't see many weight loss ads aimed towars men, yet they share in our current obesity increase in this country.
Other ads that bug me are birth control for women only, feminine hygiene spray, powder, or otherwise "there's something wrong with the female genitalia" ads.
I don't really think it affects womens' self esteem as much as it used to. Women today seem more assertive and confident that if a guy doesn't like them the way they are, there will be another one along in 10 minutes.

I feel like women are constantly being pressured into be rail thin.
It does make a lot of girls and women have eating disorders, I used to think I was fat, and my bones were showing--bad!
I don't believe in all the drugs and patches they have now. Just try to eat right and get plenty of exercise, and let nature do its job. If you are a few pounds overweight, accept it, and don't let people put you down for it.
If there is a market for making money, people use it, and people emphasizes on their looks way too much.

Yes and Yes. I walked into an accupuncture clinic for treatment and he asked me if I wanted treatment for weight loss while I was there. I could loose a few pounds but I am not that big. I could have kicked him where it hurt because it hurt me. I never went back. All of these things cause pain to people with wieght issues along with the physical damage they do.

Yes on both counts. It is a myth that everyone can have the "perfect body". It's simply not genetically possoble. By marketing these placebos they are not only perpetuating this myth they are also making a lot of money by playing on your fears and fantasies. It's just plain unethical. In past times these people were called "snake oil salsemen".

Not entirely. I've used Hydroxycut and lost 30 pounds last summer, and I haven't felt better. before i started using i had recently been dumped by this jerk i dated for a year, He always would put me down and call me fat, so after our "relationship" ended I decided to better myself, and by using this pill and going to the gym I transformed my body and realized that he didn't really matter. I now live by the phrase "there is a skinny person inside all of us, some are just wearing camouflage"
