I was in a car accident on June 13th, 2003. A drunk driver ran a stop sign, and hit the truck that I, my sister, my aunt, and my uncle were driving in. My aunt and uncle died instantly. I had a bruised lung, a fractured rib, back injuries, a busted lip, I lost half a tooth, another completely died in the root, I have nerve damage in my left foot, scars up and down both of my legs, I have a permanent indention in my right thigh from muscle damage, and I had to have 13 stitches across my forehead. My sister had to have 6 stitches, head trauma, and shoulder trauma. When we went to court, the man who hit us got more jail time for hurting my sister and me than he did for killing my aunt and uncle. How do you go about changing this law, and does anyone have a similar story. I am in North Carolina, so if you live in a different state, let me know what the penalties are in your state.

I think he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for my aunt and uncle. I'm not sure what he got convicted of for my sister and me.

Firstly I'm sorry to hear that. I am in the UK and similar things happen here all the time. A policeman recently killed a child while driving his police car with the siren on and going to an emergency call. Another chap with no licence, lessons and in a stolen car killed a child in a pram on the sidewalk. Policeman 7 yrs. Loser guy 4yrs. One guy had advanced lessons and did everything he could to train to avoid such things and the other was just a reckless ****. Don't know how to alter this.

I wish you well love - I live in England and I can tell you we have similarly ineffectual laws on car accidents - infact our whole justice system is fouled up. What you must be going through I don't want to even imagine - don't waste your time trying to change the law - just get on with your life - I know that is not going to be easy to do - you need to find other people in your position - we have a saying over here ''a problem shared is a problem halved" - it's not much advice - but reading your question affected me - I'm so sorry you went through this - try to find your sense of humour again - I suggest Joan Rivers - her humour on terrible tragedy such as yours works - believe me it works - check her out - if you don't know about her already - which I doubt - she is a wonderful comedien and she has suffered as much as you - if not worse - best of luck over there - coz the grass is definitely not greener over here !!!!

First of all I'm sorry for your loss, the laws vary alot from state to state..in most states its called involuntary man slaughter punishable up to 7years in jail..depending how drunk he was..but if its in a construction zone..here in Illinois he would of went to jail for at least 10yrs...what you can do is join aaim and help campaign to get the laws much tougher which they need to be.. a friend of mine lost his son 2 years ago and all the guy got was 6 months he was a mayor of a small town...

What was he actually convicted of? There are many different ways this may have played out which would explain why he was sentenced this way.

i live in england, if that happened here there would be a man hunt and you would sue. people who drink and drive should have there licence removed peranently and put into jail permanently there is no excuse for this. death row....eye for an eye.
