Have you every seen anyone throw a knuckle ball with the thumb only?.....make a fist like the "a # one" sign....put the ball on top of the closed fist and then hold the ball with your thumb.....no seam just the hide.....and then throw it....one of my coaches in the early 60's taught it to me ......just as effective and no finger nails to worry about.......I am showing my age....I call it my "Fonz" pitch!!!

Never seen it done like that. I've always used the finger nails. Interesting approach, though. I'll have to give it a whirl.

almost the same grip except the ball in between my thumb and index finger

yes I was taught that way too, but since have discovered many ways to throw it.
