Hypothetically, if in 2008, when we are to elect a new president, if the United States were at war with another country, would Bush still remain in office or would we go ahead with an election?

We ALWAYS have the election. It cannot be delayed for any reason.

In addition to having the election...Bush isn't allowed to run again. The only way that could change is a Constitutional amendment. An amendment to allow for the possibility of suspended elections or extended terms as President will never happen.

These people who say it depends on the situation are way off base. And someone says FDR was elected 3 times during WW2? Think about it...Elections happen every 4 years. We were in WW2 for less than 4 years.

We would certainly have an election. We changed Presidents in other wars. The only way we wouldn't was if this country were so devastated by war internally that it couldn't be set up. But, you saw the conditions under which Iraq had elections, so it would have to be pretty bad.

the US Constitution says calls for presidential elections every four years, regardless of war declaration. BTW, we do not elect the president, it is done by the electoral college who is a representative body who is not bound by law to vote the way of the voting public. i suspect there would be rioting in the streets if that happened.

technically the e.c. could vote for the president even without a widespread or efficient plebiscite vote, in the case of a surprise foreign attack, disaster or the like, which could hinder the free exercise of voting by the people on polling day.

good question.

So far we've gone ahead with elections during wars, even the Civil War. There was some talk of planning to postpone them if there was a terrorist attack in 2004.

Can you imagine the outcry if Bush remained in office? I think some people would literally flip their lids!
But seriously...no, he wouldn't. There's always been elections in past wars.
