The origin of pimples/acne/zits is still unknown. There are still a few issues, which have not been brought to light. Nobody exactly knows why the pores collapse and pack the sebum content within the skin. Researchers have not been able to find as to how this process spreads from one sebaceous gland to another.

Acne is a skin disease, which is created by the clogged pores on the skin. It is a major problem for millions of teenagers, both male and female. It makes a person depressed and so proper treatment is necessary.

Though pimples are just a small bump on the skin, the effects could be traumatic on some as they lose self-esteem among peers. It is advised to get it treated with the help of a dermatologist who would recommend proper medications, which would heal and prevent acne. Proper care like cleaning the face

after jogging, traveling etc are recommended. Shaving properly, avoiding sun and choosing the right cosmetics would help a lot.

It is not entirely understood what causes zits. It is known what they are, but not exactly what causes them. However the experts think that it is most likely that zits are caused by hormonal changes that take place in your body at certain stages in your life. This explains why zits can be encountered at times when the body is experiencing hormonal changes such as in the teen years.

Zits are a normal part of life. Almost everyone has them, especially as teens, and they are not sent to make your life a misery at the exact time that you don’t want them. They are a part of growing up and if you are a teen with zits you can be sure that most of your friends will get them soon if they haven’t already.

So What is Acne?

Acne describes whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. (You may also recognize slang terms like zits). Most teenagers get the type of acne called acne vulgaris, which can show up on the face, neck, shoulders, back, and chest. Sometimes if a skin pore gets clogged beneath the skin with excess oil and bacteria, the dreaded acne raises its head.

Whiteheads occur when a skin pore gets clogged, closes, and then bulges out. If a pore gets clogged but stays open, the top may darken and then you get a blackhead. Pimples are caused when dead skin and bacteria work their way under your skin. This leads to a small infection that makes your skin look red.

Causes of Acne

Even though everyone is different, acne is usually caused by the buildup of oil and dead skin in a skin pore. This build up of oil and dead skin occurs because of:

Natural hormones - particularly active in your teens.
Plugged skin. Skin cells can close the oil glands or pores, creating blackheads or whiteheads, (as mentioned above).
Bacteria. Bacteria can easily infect oil glands and pores and grow very fast.
Family background. If you have acne, your kids are more likely to have it as well.

How To Reduce Your Acne Problem

Do NOT squeeze, pick, scratch, or rub your skin because it makes the problem worse, and it may even cause scarring.
Regularly shampoo your hair, and try to keep it off your face if possible - especially at night.
Keep a diary to verify if you are one of the few people whose acne gets worse if they eat certain food.
Exercise regularly to get the old blood flowing, and make sure you get a wash as soon after as possible.
Avoid touching your face unnecessarily.
Try to minimize your stress levels as much as possible.
Avoid getting sunburned.
Change your wash cloth every day because bacteria grow on damp cloth.
Wash your face twice daily with a gentle soap like Dove or Lever 2000.
Always rinse really well with plenty of water.
Only wear makeup on special occasions, and then be sure to remove it completely.

There are different types of acne. The most common acne is the type that develops during the teen years. Puberty causes hormone levels to rise, especially testosterone. High hormones signal skin glands to start making more oil (sebum). Oil releases from the pores to protect the skin and keep it moist. Acne begins when oil mixes with dead cells and clogs the skin's pores. Bacteria can grow in this mixture, and if it leaks into nearby tissues, it causes swelling, redness, and pus. A common name for these raised bumps is pimples.

See an illustration of how pimples form. (at site listed below)

Certain medications can cause acne to develop. This type of acne usually clears up when you stop taking the medication.

It isn't just teens who are affected by acne. Sometimes newborns have acne because their mothers pass hormones to them just before delivery. Acne can also appear when the stress of birth causes the baby's body to release hormones on its own. Young children and older adults also may get acne.

A few rare conditions of the endocrine system, such as polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing's syndrome, can lead to outbreaks of acne.

Hormones can cause zits, too. That's why most highschool kids get zits, they're going through puberty and their hormone levels are all crazy.

Greasy foods, bacteria from pillows, phones, your hands (if you touch your face), not enough water, stress, just being ugly (okay, that one isn't true).

If you're face with problem- see a dermatologist.
