White people believed that God had created them superior above all other races and therfore thought that the behavior was acceptable...and because that idea had been passed on for generations and generations...that it was just instilled in the mind. The defense started that they were better...then when people started to see how bad it was and wanted to change it...they never actually thought it through. So when they found out that if they abolished slavery that slaves would be able to do things...like vote and get human treatment. Well this scared the whites because they feared that they would lose their power...so then the white people who still wanted slaves just played upon that fear.

They were in a new country, had a lot of land to work and not enough people to do it. If they had paid the workers a fair wage, it would have been a different story. Instead, they were given room and board, food and little else. They were thought to be inferior just because of their color or education or background. Through the ages there have been many slaves. Many Chinese were made into slaves during the California gold rush and American Indians were used to build and maintain the missions. Who do you think built our railroads? The worst, I feel, is when they removed children from their familes and sent them to work as a slave in a rich man's home. Over time, it became harder to control the slaves. They got wise, got tired of being abused and were running away. Abraham Lincoln brought some of this to light. Even during the Civil War many still thought they were right to keep slaves. It is human nature to want to overpower the weaker. That's partly why we can't have world peace.

In the American system of slavery, the slaveholders interpreted the bible in such a way as to suggest that it justified slavery. 200 years later, they were still using the same defense- it was just more inclusive as to include economy and capitalism.
The ridiculous defense (offense) included the idea that "negroes" were sub-human, and so, not entitled to the same rights and privileges, nor capable of the same intellectual or emotional capacity as were whites.

In the Bible is states we can own slaves. Also it states that god put a mark on the first person to kill another. That mark was __________Well fill in the blanks with a race of people you do not like. Any one will do. We need to be careful when reading the Bible and taking it word for word. Any thing can be justified. We need to start doing the right thing, because it is the right thing to do. Not because it makes us money.

As unusual because it could desire to look immediately, i'm no longer completely useful that they felt the could desire to justify it in any respect. Slavery have been an employer international extensive because particularly plenty the 1st time one prolonged family defeated yet another. yet whilst justification did look necessary, they often became to the Bible.

They did not have to defend slavery. At that time it was legal. Slaves were not considered human beings, but property and slave ownership was legal.

They didn't consider their slaves people or at least people who were capable of taking care of themselves. Someone who knew better had to take care of them.

slave owners truly believed they were superior to their slaves simply because of their differences (education, religion, race).
it's unfortunate that this mentality has not been completely eradicated by this day and age.
*I'm off my soapbox now.
