We have a plant but it has not bloomed before. We think we may have buds but not sure. It is not a new leaf but different growth coming off a leaf.

I would say that the buds will be pointier than a new leaf stem. You might just have to wait and see :-)

I think the bloom looks like a large water lily
if you have buds,, they develop pretty quick
so you'll be able to tell what they are soon
(our buds got about 6-8 inches before bloom)

They look very similar to the flower buds of a Christmas Cactus, and when the Flowers open they also look similar to a Christmas cactus
