First you need a server to act as a domain controller for your network. Then you can add the workstations to the domain.
Keep in mind that in order for a computer to be joined to a domain it must be running , Windows 2000 professional, Windows XP Professional and with a little help also XP Media Center.

Install a server with two network card, OS Windows 2000 or 2003 server. Take the active directory wizard and make it a Domain controller. Configure a dhcp server or you can give static IP to all client machines. Install client OS like 2000 or XP and add each machine to Domain. Connect your DSL to first network card of your server and connect the second NIC of the server to switch. Connect all the client machines to switch. Enable ICS (Internet connection sharing) in server and configure this server as gateway in all client machines. Make sure to check the IP of the local intrant NIC of the server after enabling ICS. The ICS may reset the IP, you can change it back to what ever you want.

You also need Windows 2000 or 2003 server to act as domain controllers to create or domain. Linux does have a ability to act as a domain controller but you'll need study some man pages to find out how.
Linux has the distinct advantage of being free.
