Everytime I taste blood it gives the distinctive flavor of copper. Every sci-fi novel I read mentions a copper taste in their mouth, so I know my taste buds aren't messed up.

What element inside the human body makes your blood have the distinctive flavor of copper?

It tastes like Iron actually, because of the haemoglobin (which contains Iron) in your blood.

Your books probably say copper because presumably copper and iron taste alike, and more people are likely to have tasted copper due to copper pipes being used for drinking water, so they know what copper tastes like.

Blood, to me, tastes metallic. I don't have the frame of reference to narrow the metallic taste down to copper, but I've always assumed that the taste came from the red blood cells and the iron within them. There is a plasma protein, called ceruloplasm, which transports copper in your blood, so perhaps that is where the copper taste is coming from.

The better question is why does copper taste like blood?

Blood has a metallic-like taste to it because of minerals like iron, zince etc... the easiest way to describe this is to say it's like copper because most people have put pennies in their mouth at some point when they were little children. "you can't honestly say that unless you've tried copper before." Or blood right?

Probably due to the iron (Fe+) that cleaves to the heme groups in the hemoglobin. Without it, the oxygen (02) molecules would be unable to attach themselves to the hemoglobin. I'm just curious as to why you've tasted blood and copper enough times to be able to make that paralell assessment.
