Grigori Rasputin was a master social climber who could "cold read" like no one else. He used this over-whelming talent along with his knowledge of folk lore and folk medicine, along with great personal magnetism, to sway the Romanoff court. For some interesting info on him, read the Russian/Tchelkey ritual chapter in Anton LaVey's The Satanic Rituals; and for a highly entertaining look at the man behind the myth, rent the Hammer Film; Rasputin: the Mad Monk, with Christopher Lee in the title role. Really a well done and suspenseful movie that is quite true to the subject matter. Also, supposedly his daughter had written a book right before she died about life with her father. Sure would like to find that!

Rasputin may have been either. personally, i've always found him evil, as he has continuously haunted my dreams ever since the animated movie Anastasia came out. there was something different about him though, good or evil...

He was a con artist, but with mystical powers. His influence at court, and the resulting embarrasments associated with his aberrant and deviate behavior helped to bring down the Czar. He is one of those enigmatic characters in history whose life raised more questions than answers. He was indeed the mad monk.
