People, particularly young people, feel a great need to differentiate themselves from their peers. Even people I know in their thirties do this. They seem to believe that individuality arises from a collection of disparate media preferences.
To quote Nick Hornby [via High Fidelity] "What you like is more important than what you ARE like." This pretty much sums up their views on identity.
When I was in high school my friends and I thought Jhonen Vasquez was the greatest thing since black t-shirts, but pretty soon Hot Topic was selling JTHM merch and he got a show on Nickelodeon. My friends, being alternative media drones with identity issues, all stopped liking Jhonen Vasquez. This is doubly hilarious in that Mr. Vasquez makes fun of this very mentality in his Anne Gwish comics.
They give up the things they [supposedly] love when they cease fulfilling the function of setting them apart from their peers. Likewise they tend to adopt new styles and preferences based primarily on their obscurity.
It's like protection mimicry amongst insects. Non-poisonous insects will display the markings of a related venomous species so predators won't try to eat them, mistaking their bright colors for real venom. Only in this case it's the adoption of the material aspects of a particular culture in the hopes that others will mistake their CD collection, mascara, and knee boots for an actual identity.

I don't know, but I've met a few people who are like that. They become angry with the bands and call them sellouts. I don't listen to any of those bands, so I wouldnt' know.
I think that's funny considering that everybody still loves the Beatles and the Rolling Stones despite their huge success.
Another thought: maybe many of the people you speak of just outgrew these bands, whereas nobody outgrows the Beatles.
There are a lot of bands I liked as a preteen or a teen and now they just seem ridiculous, and I wonder why I ever liked them.
People change.

well people change and so does their taste... some bands too tend to loose their identity along the way or the reason u liked them in the first place when they get too famous!
But with more bands coming on the stage they tend to steal the attention and some of the followers of other bands. You might like a band beacause its closest to what u would want.... once what u want comes out in another band u just might leave urself..

YES! I know the problem! I have a few friends/relatives like that! It drives me insane! I would be the happiest person alive if more people knew about/loved my favourite band! I guess I sorta get what they are doing though; I mean it's sort of like they're own secrect, personl band thing, but then everyone knows about them and they have to share. But still; if they ever really liked the band; you should stick with them til the end!
And just for the record... HIM f***ing rock!!!!!

That is stupid, and i hate it when people say 'i used to like them, but now their a sellout band', that is so gay. It doesnt really matter anyways, some people only like bands maybe because they're famous, and say they like them to be accepted by people. People like that just need to die. And the fact that the word sellout makes people not like a band because of it is retarded, the word sellout was made by a retard. So, if you think a band is a sellout then your basically a retard as well.

People really are fair-weather fans sometimes. Maybe they don't like them after they get popular because they realize the people or type of people they DON'T like, are listening to the same music they are and therefore that music sucks now or the musicians "sold out" to popular radio. It is ridiculous really, I agree with you.

in case you pick better 'sparkling and tidy' activities, then you definately ought to bathe different flooring, dirt and varnish, sparkling living house windows, have a change round with furniture, manage issues otherwise, kind by potential of your kitchen and so on Or some thing interesting, bypass out and save till you drop!

Popular bands are considered trendy, and sell outs. People who drop them don't want to be considered trend whores.
