There are several ways to connect 2 computers:
(1) Modem~Modem - which is I think complex for you.
(2) Laplink cable - "similar" (but not exactly same) as LPT cable. Good alternative if you don't have ethernet card.
(3) LAN cable - both computers must have ethernet card, cross over cable (if you don't have hub). Must configure both computers their IPs (TCP/IP).
(4) Others - see wiki.

I believe that 2&3 are the most usual. Please see wiki for more info.

Simple way to network 2 pc's is by using a "cross over" network cable and using the Network Setup Wizard in the control panel.

If all you wanna do is get some files off the hard drive, then remove hard drive from one pc, set it to "slave" using the jumpers at the end (should be a diagram on hard drive to show slave setting) plug it into other pc and boot up.

Buy a Disk Drive Holder, you can plug your old hard drive in it, and then search it from the new computer. I did this recently.

Either that, or fix it as a slave in the new computer
