This is true. Most of the time you have to break in an engine. Follow the engine breakin and it will get better as time goes on. You can expect the best milage you are ever gonna get about 15000-20000 miles.
Just beshure you follow the regular oil changes and the mantaince.
PS dont beleave that 3000 crap the mini oil marts say. Follow the manufactors requairments

Not much I'm afraid. Maybe 1 or 2 mpg. Car & Driver tested that pick-up awhile ago and got worse mileage than you. If you want better mileage in a pick-up you'll need to buy a Nissan or Toyota -- one of many reasons why the cheaper vehicle is not always the best "deal".
Good Luck.

I'm driving a sierra with 40K miles on it and the fuel economy has improved about 3 MPG however the rising price of gas counters out the improvement in the fuel economy.

Hahaha... that's good....
Technically as the engine wears in it moves more freely... but like was mentioned, don't expect a noticeable difference at 20k miles or anything.
Do yourself a favor... Buy the AEM Brute Force Intake For It.
It is amazing. Sounds incredible, and adds power that you can feel.
My friend has a colorado (same truck) he put it on, and it is awesome.
I couldn't believe it.

running in is usually only in the first 1k, ur mpg now is what it will stay at (or it will get worse if u dont have regular servicing). to save a few cents pg, u could get a hiclone installed
http://www.hicloneqld.com/hiclone.htm they are said to save u up to 20% on ur feul bill and supply 15% more power.

Wow they were really trying to sell you that truck. SUV's are getting harder to sell. I guess another one bites the dust.
